Horsehair Raku Art Vase
This vase was thrown on a potter's wheel and made of raku clay. A liquid clay mixture, terra sigillata, which is very fine clay molecules, was applied to the surface of the pot and burnished to make it smooth and shiny. Then it was fired to about 1800 degrees F in an electric kiln. Next, it was heated again to about 1600 degrees F in a propane gas top hat raku kiln and removed when red hot. When the surface temperature was appropriate, some sugar was sprinkled on the pot to make small specks and then pieces of horse hair were draped on the pot to make an artistic design. This pot is 12.5 inches high and 5.25 inches at the widest point.
